The JPC, led by BJP MP PP Chaudhary, held a meeting on ‘Ek Desh Ek Election’ on Friday (July 11, 2025). In the meeting of JPC, former Chief Justice Justice J.K. S. Khehar said in his presentation that this bill does not in principle violate the basic structure of the Constitution.
The former Chief Justice said that the role of the Election Commission has come under intensive investigation as concerns are being expressed on the proposal to provide excessive powers and a national debate is required to revaluate this section.
Two former Chief Justice of India gave suggestions to amend the law
At the same time, both former Chief Justices suggested to JPC that the Election Commission should not be given such unbridled strength as the amendment bill has been proposed. He said that there should be a system to maintain control and balance for this.
Apart from this, former Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and J. S. Khehar, while suggesting to the Parliamentary Committee, said that there should be a monitoring mechanism for conducting elections.

In this meeting, JPC Chairman and BJP MP PP Chaudhary said that in JPC meeting on Friday (July 11, 2025), former Chief Justice J.K. S. Khehar and Judge D.Y. Chandrachud joined. We got to know his opinion about the constitutional questions about the One Nation One Election from them.
He said that we have so far interacted with the government and other stake holders in Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Chandigarh. We want to take suggestions from the side and opposition, so that information can be made about everyone.
Bill has been passed in Parliament only last year
It is noteworthy that during December last year, the bill of ‘one country one election’ was passed in Parliament. According to experts, the government is preparing to implement it from 2029. This was the 129th amendment of the Constitution.
