Assam BJP Candidates List: BJP sets its fielding in Assam! Big bet on many faces including Pradyut Bordoloi, will it backfire?

BJP has finally released its long-awaited list of candidates for the Assam Assembly elections 2026. The party has decided to contest 89 seats itself, while the remaining 37 seats have been given to allies. There are a total of 126 seats in Assam and BJP has fielded its candidates on 89. Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) has got 26 seats and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) has got 11 seats.

CM Himanta will contest elections from Jalukbari only.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma will contest elections from his old and strong seat Jalukbari. He has been winning this seat continuously since 2001 and it is considered his stronghold. On the other hand, Congress state president and deputy leader in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi is contesting from Jorhat. BJP has fielded senior leader, former speaker and current MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami here. This contest will be one of the most high-profile battles in the state, as Jorhat has been a traditional Congress constituency but Goswami has won from here several times.

Which big names are included in BJP’s list?

  • Ticket to prominent BJP leader Manab Deka from Lakhimpur.
  • BJP’s Mayur Borgohain vs senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia in Nazira.
  • Former tea garden leader Dheeraj Gowala recently joined from Titabad. This seat was earlier a stronghold of Congress and is associated with late CM Tarun Gogoi.
  • Former Congress leader Bhupen Bora from Bihpuria.
  • Senior leader Pradyut Bordoloi, who left Congress from Dispur, has been given the ticket. Dispur is the most prestigious seat of Assam.
  • Chance for Suruj Dihingia in Mahmora, because sitting MLA Jogen Mohan has been elected to Rajya Sabha.
  • Big face-off between Chakradhar Gogoi vs Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) President Lurinjyoti Gogoi.
  • AGP veteran Pradeep Hazarika vs Rajor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi in Sivasagar.

BJP has not given tickets to many sitting MLAs, which shows the new strategy of the party. The party is focusing on avoiding anti-incumbency and giving opportunities to new faces. The list includes experienced leaders along with new and young faces, women and candidates from tribal areas.

BJP’s work finished in only one list, Congress candidates left

Elections will be held in a single phase on 9 April 2026. The last date for nomination is March 23 and the results will be declared on May 4, 2026. Congress has so far released two lists of 65 candidates, while BJP has completed its work with a single list. With this announcement the political atmosphere in Assam has completely heated up. NDA alliance seems to be in a strong position, but Congress and opposition alliance are also challenging. The contest is going to be interesting on many high-profile seats.
