On 13 May 2023, communal riots erupted due to an objectionable social media post about Prophet Muhammad in Akola city of Maharashtra. 17 -year -old petitioner Mohammad Afzal Mohammad Sharif claims that he was seriously injured in the riots. The police took his statement in the hospital but did not register an FIR.
The petitioner claims that he saw four people hitting a person with a sword and iron pipe on the Rajeshwar bridge. Later this person was identified as Vilas Mahadevrao Gaikwad. Gaikwad died in this attack. The police registered an FIR in the case, but remained inactive in his case.
