Indian Railways is no longer dependent only on the ticket money collected from passengers. By selling scrap and increasing earnings from other sources, Railways has improved the facilities at the stations without burdening the passengers with fares. In the last financial year 2025-26, Railways has earned Rs 6813.86 crore by selling scrap, which is much more than the target of Rs 6000 crore set by the Railways itself.
Railway’s non-fare earnings increased
By selling old and useless goods, the Railways has not only earned huge profits but has also freed up a lot of space in depots, yards and workshops. This has speeded up work and improved cleanliness at these places and has also promoted economic or green targets like recycling and reducing waste. Non-fare earnings of Railways i.e. earnings other than tickets have also increased rapidly.
According to Railways, there has been an increase of 168% in the last 5 years, i.e. from about Rs 290 crore to more than Rs 777 crore. In this, the major share of income coming from 120 Janaushadhi centers and 22 premium brand outlets opened at stations has been major. In the statement issued by the Railways, it has been said that in view of this increased earning, the Railways has also taken many new steps for the convenience of the passengers. Now cleanliness has improved at many stations, modern facilities have increased and security arrangements have also been strengthened.
Jan Aushadhi Yojana Center at Railway Stations
Let us tell you that under the Jan Aushadhi Scheme of the Central Government, these centers have been opened at railway stations for cheap medicines. 50 centers were started in March 2024, after which the target was set to increase this scheme to 150 and till now 120 centers have been started. Apart from this, Railways has also done many new experiments to increase earnings. These include facilities like multi-level car parking, medical centre, e-wheelchair, health kiosk, gaming zone and branding on the platform.
At the same time, Western Railways has also started co-working spaces and digital lounges at its stations. There is passenger Wi-Fi, charging points, comfortable seating and working facilities.
