Women Reservation Bill: The amendment bill of Nari Shakti Vandan Act 2023, i.e. Women’s Reservation Bill, brought by the Central Government could not be passed in the Lok Sabha during the special session of the Parliament. The Central Government had introduced the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament for the 131st amendment to the Constitution, but on Friday (April 17, 2026) the bill did not get the support of two-thirds majority. A total of 298 votes were cast in favor of this bill, while 230 MPs voted in opposition.
The Central Government has expressed concern over the non-passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said after voting on the bill, ‘The opposition did not support us on the historic and important bill which was brought to give respect and rights to the women of the country.’ He said, ‘It is a matter of great regret that the opposition has missed an opportunity, but the campaign to give respect and rights to women under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi will continue and we will continue to give their rights to the women of the country.’

Rahul Gandhi said on the failure of women reservation bill
At the same time, on the non-passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha, Leader of the Opposition in the House and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, while reacting, said that this bill was an attack on the Constitution and we have stopped this attack. This is a good thing. He said, ‘We had already clearly said that this is not a women’s reservation bill, but it is an attempt to change the political structure of India and we have stopped it.
Taking aim at PM Modi, the leader of the opposition said that I am telling the Prime Minister that if you want a women’s bill, then you should bring out a bill for the year 2023 and implement it. The entire opposition will support the government.
