Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has given a strict warning to the Central Government, saying that if political injustice is done to South India through delimitation in the name of women’s reservation, it will not be accepted. He made it clear that any decision without broad consensus on this issue would be harmful for the unity and democracy of the country.
Full support of Congress on the issue of women’s reservation: Reddy
On the issue of women’s reservation, he clearly said that the Congress Party fully supports it. He reminded that since the time of independence, Congress had laid the foundation of women empowerment by giving women the right to vote. Later, women were also given reservation in Panchayat and municipal bodies.
Revanth Reddy accused of taking advantage of women’s reservation
She appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that if the government brings a Women’s Reservation Bill, Congress will immediately support it, so that women can get their rights. However, he alleged that under the guise of women’s reservation, efforts are being made to weaken South India through delimitation of Lok Sabha seats.
Giving an example, he said that if seats are distributed only on the basis of population, then the difference in representation between North and South India will increase further, which will cause injustice to small states.
States pay more taxes but get less share: Reddy
Revanth Reddy also raised the issue of economic inequality. He said that the states of South India pay more taxes to the Centre, but get less share in return, while some other states get more resources. In such a situation, efforts to reduce political representation are also a matter of concern.
Suggested to adopt hybrid model
The Chief Minister suggested that a hybrid model should be adopted for delimitation, in which 50% seats should be decided on the basis of population and the remaining 50% on the basis of economic contribution of the states (GSDP). He stressed that any decision on such a sensitive issue should be taken only after discussion in all states, political parties and assemblies.
