Amidst the political riot in the state regarding the assembly elections to be held in Assam, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday (April 5, 2026) addressed an election rally in Mariani assembly constituency in support of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Rupjyoti Kurmi.
In his address, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi praised the BJP government while highlighting the changes that have taken place in Assam in the last decade. He said that earlier the identity of Assam was associated with unrest and terrorism, but today peace has been established in the state under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The present government has given protection to the wildlife of the state: Majhi
Referring to the immense potential of Assam, the Chief Minister of Odisha described tourism and wildlife sector as especially important. Referring to Kaziranga National Park, he alleged that many rhinos were poached during the Congress rule, while the present government has ensured better protection of wildlife.
Majhi also accused the previous Congress governments of promoting large-scale illegal migration, which increased the problem of land encroachment. He said that the BJP government has taken a strong stand on this issue and effective action has been taken on it under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Leading the development of Assam: Majhi
Praising the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma, he said that he is not only leading the development of Assam but is also playing an important role in the progress of the entire North-Eastern region. Giving credit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Majhi said that the development of Assam has been one of his priorities, due to which the state has now become the center of the country’s development vision. Apart from this, giving historical context, Majhi mentioned the time of China invasion and said that during that period, the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had expressed emotional concern for Assam, whereas the present leadership has done concrete development work.
Double engine government freed land from encroachment: Majhi
Throwing light on the economic and cultural identity of Assam, Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi also mentioned the global identity of Assam tea and the international fame of Muga and Eri silk. He claimed that after the formation of the double engine government, about 1.5 lakh bighas of land has been freed from encroachment.
Majhi said that various schemes of the BJP government have benefited the poor sections, especially women, and their livelihoods have improved. Tea garden workers, who had been struggling for land rights for a long time, are now being given land leases and their daily wages have also increased.
Odisha CM seeks support from Mariani for BJP candidate
Although BJP candidate Roopjyoti Kurmi was not present during the public meeting held in Mariani assembly constituency, Majhi still appealed to the public to vote in his favor in the upcoming elections. He said that BJP’s victory will ensure continuity of peace and development in the region. He called upon the people of Mariani to support the BJP candidate and appealed to vote for stability and progress.
