The Election Commission has taken major action amid the election atmosphere in West Bengal. The Election Commission (ECI) has suspended the police officers responsible for negligence in law and order during the nomination rally of Suvendu Adhikari in Bhawanipur on April 2. Union Home Minister Amit Shah was also present in the rally and questions were raised regarding law and order. At the same time, Trinamool Congress has accused EC’s action of adopting a biased attitude.

The police personnel against whom the Election Commission has taken action include Siddharth Dutta (DC-II, South Division, Kolkata Police), Priyankar Chakraborty (Officer-in-Charge, Alipore), Chandi Charan Banerjee (Additional OC, Alipore) and Saurabh Chatterjee (Sergeant, Alipore). All of them have been suspended and disciplinary action has been initiated against them.

This action of the Election Commission is a major action taken in connection with the tension that broke out on April 1 near the convoy of Opposition Leader of West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. His convoy was marching towards Alipore Survey Bhawan in South Kolkata. It was here that Suvendu Adhikari was about to file his nomination. There was a security lapse during this period.
