Amidst the increasing tension in West Asia and global concern over the Strait of Hormuz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has made it clear that his government’s focus is on the country’s economic interests, energy security and diplomatic solutions. He said that he understands why people are worried about rising inflation and everyday expenses, and the government is already working on a ‘five-point plan’ to deal with it.
Starmer assured that despite the circumstances, people will get immediate relief. He said, ‘Today your energy bills will be less, because the effect of the steps we have taken in the budget will be visible and whatever happens in Iran, the prices are currently fixed till July.’ His statement directly addresses the fear that exists regarding the rise in global oil prices due to the tension in Hormuz.
Starmer also reacted to US President Donald Trump’s warning of a possible exit from NATO. Calling it an attempt to create pressure and noise, he said that NATO is the most effective military alliance ever and Britain is fully committed to it. He said, ‘No matter how much pressure or noise there is, I will take every decision keeping the interest of the country in mind.’
He also made it clear that Britain will not be directly involved in this conflict. He said, ‘This is not our fight, and we will not get caught in it.’ He also said that it is necessary to build closer relations with Europe in view of defence, security and economic future.
Starmer also announced diplomatic initiatives on the Hormuz crisis. He said that Britain will host an important meeting later this week with countries who want to cooperate in reopening the Strait of Hormuz. He said that Yvette Cooper will chair the meeting, in which discussions will be held on restoring freedom of navigation, ensuring the safety of stranded ships and sailors and resuming the movement of essential goods.
According to Starmer, Britain is already active in this direction. The Foreign Minister and the Chancellor have talked to their counterparts from the G7 countries, while the Defense Minister is in touch with the partners in the Middle East. He said that the UK has brought together 35 countries under a joint initiative for maritime security in the Gulf region.
He stressed that the most effective way to reduce the cost of living in Britain is to reduce tensions in the Middle East and reopen the Strait of Hormuz and that every possible diplomatic route would be taken to achieve this.
