What will Iran choose between war and peace? Nuclear talks with America in Geneva, which country got the responsibility?

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi left for Geneva from Tehran on Sunday (15 February 2026). There will be a second round of indirect talks with America on Iran’s nuclear program. Earlier on 6 February 2026, Oman had also hosted the first round of talks in Muscat. Iran says it wants a new nuclear deal that provides economic benefits to both sides. The talks are taking place after a 12-day conflict in mid-2025 in which the US bombed Iranian nuclear sites.

What issues will be the focus of the talks?

According to Iran’s government news agency IRNA, the Iranian Foreign Ministry gave a statement saying that Abbas Araghchi is going to Geneva with a diplomatic and technical team. Talks between Iran and America will take place on Tuesday i.e. 17 February 2026 and Oman will mediate in it.

The focus of this entire conversation is on Iran’s nuclear program. Iran claims its nuclear program is peaceful, but it is enriching uranium up to 60%, just a short step away from weapons-grade (90%+). America is taking a very strict stance regarding this,

US President Donald Trump has taken a tough stance and said that Iran should not be allowed to enrich uranium at any level. Trump has repeatedly threatened to use force if Iran does not agree to the deal. In return, Iran has also said that it will respond to any attack.

Why is a visit to Aragchi special in Geneva?

In Geneva he will also meet the Foreign Minister of Switzerland, Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi and other international officials. Iran has described European countries as ‘irrelevant’ in nuclear talks and said that now Gulf countries like Oman and Qatar are ahead in mediation.

This conversation is an attempt to resolve the decades-old dispute between Iran and America, where strict statements are coming from both sides. If successful, the stress may reduce, otherwise the situation may worsen. The Swiss government has also confirmed these conversations.

Talks deteriorated after Israel’s attack

In June 2024, Israel launched a 12-day war against Iran, in which America bombed Iran’s nuclear sites. After this the talks broke down. Now the Trump administration has emphasized on diplomacy. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Washington wants a diplomatic solution.

US representative Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner are also involved in these talks. Iran took a tough crackdown on recent nationwide protests, which Trump also threatened. Gulf Arab countries (such as Saudi Arabia, UAE) have warned that any attack could turn into a regional war.
