The Modi government at the Center told Parliament on Monday (December 1) that almost 90 percent fewer incidents of field fires have been recorded in Punjab and Haryana during the paddy harvesting season in 2025 compared to 2022. Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav has given this information in Parliament in a written reply to a question by Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi regarding the effects of stubble burning.
Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav also said that Delhi has recorded its lowest average air quality index between January-November since 2018, except during the 2020 Covid lockdown. What did the Environment Minister say on Charanjit Channi’s question?
Responding to a question from the Congress MP, the Environment Minister said air pollution in Delhi-NCR is the result of multiple local and regional factors, including vehicular and industrial emissions, dust from construction, waste burning and meteorological conditions. He also said that stubble burning is also an important factor in Punjab and Delhi-NCR region.
According to the information given by the Union Environment Minister in the Lok Sabha, the highest number of incidents of stubble burning in Punjab in 2025 have been recorded in Sangrur district. A total of 693 incidents of stubble burning have been recorded in Sangrur, followed by 547 incidents in Firozpur, 376 incidents in Muktsar, while 85 incidents have been recorded in Jalandhar.

Referring to the measures taken to curb stubble burning, Bhupendra Yadav said that an amount of more than Rs 3120 crore has been given by the Center since 2018-19 for the supply of crop residue disposal machines to Punjab and Haryana.
