‘America is changing the rules, China is making its moves, India now…’, a big statement by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar

Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar made sharp remarks on the global situation on Saturday (29 November) during a program organized in Kolkata. He said that both America and China have changed the rules of the international system as per their own, due to which the whole world is in a state of uncertainty and confusion. According to Jaishankar, America is now making direct one-to-one deals with countries, while China is implementing the rules made by it more strictly. In this environment, instead of sitting silent, India is focusing on increasing its national capacity and reducing its weaknesses. He said that before 2014 there was no such thinking, but now ‘Make in India’ has become the primary strategy of India.

S. What did Jaishankar say?

S. Jaishankar said that America was leading the global system for a long time, but now it has suddenly changed its methods of engagement. At the same time, China is following its old strategy and implementing the rules as per its own wish. Its effect is that confusion is increasing in other countries. Globalization is under pressure and fears regarding supply chains have increased. Many countries are now looking for safer options for themselves. They are making deals with both America and China and are also making new agreements with each other, especially free trade agreements.

Talking about India’s strategy in these changing circumstances, Jaishankar said that the country is working on such policies which will increase its power and global influence. India’s economy is growing rapidly and India is ready to fulfill international responsibilities. He said that it is important for a big country to have a strong industrial base. Before 2014, there was no big thinking in this direction, but now industrial growth is the main priority of India.

Foreign Minister said this big thing about China

He described ‘Make in India’ as the basis of the changing picture of India. In the last ten years, this campaign has set new visions and big goals. Jaishankar appealed to the industry not to focus only on small profits, but to partner in strengthening India’s domestic supply chain and making its place in the global market. He said that ‘Make in India’ will be completely successful only when research, design and innovation are also done in India.

Regarding the global supply chain dependent on China, Jaishankar said that about one-third of the world’s production takes place in China. This increases the risk to the reliability of the supply chain. The climate crisis, war and energy market turmoil have further increased the risks. America is now becoming an energy exporter, while China has extensive control over the renewable energy sector. Blockchain, economic sanctions and tariffs have created new uncertainties in the world of business and finance.
