Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee on Tuesday (October 28, 2025) targeted the Election Commission over the Voter List Revision Process (SIR). Banerjee said that the Commission is conspiring with the BJP to exclude real voters and disturb the political balance before the 2026 assembly elections.
During the press conference, Banerjee said, ‘You will see what TMC does on the ground. We are not worried about law and order, peace will prevail and TMC will do what it has to do. Describing the Election Commission as an ‘alliance group’ of the BJP, he alleged that SIR has been declared, under which the government will now decide who will vote.
‘The aim of SIR is to drive out voters’
Banerjee said, ‘Our party’s stand is clear from day one that the purpose of this SIR is to drive out voters. Earlier voters used to decide who would be in the government, but now the government will decide who will vote.
Attacking the government, the TMC leader said that the existing voter lists were also used for the 2024 general elections, so if there is any flaw in it then the Center should dissolve the Lok Sabha. He said, ‘From the Prime Minister to the Home Minister and me, we all have been elected through this voter list. We should resign and start SIR. In 2002, the process took two years and now they will implement it in two months.
TMC questions the government regarding cancellation of SIR in Assam
The party raised questions on the exclusion of Assam from the SIR process. Abhishek alleged, ‘Except Assam, they are working smartly because BJP is in power there. Why is this not happening in Assam, how is this possible? All other border states like Tripura and Meghalaya do not have SIR, so why only Bengal? If your aim is to deport Bangladeshis then why don’t you implement SIR in other border states?’
Warning the Election Commission, the TMC MP said that the party will give and if this happens then it will march to Delhi and gherao the Election Commission office. Banerjee said, ‘Whatever happens, we will increase our seats even after SIR and BJP will remain below 50. You want to do NRC through the back door through SIR.
BJP urges Election Commission on TMC’s statement
Banerjee’s comments came at a time when the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal held an all-party meeting on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in the state. The BJP immediately hit back at Trinamool Congress’ attack on the Election Commission and urged the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) to respond to Banerjee’s ‘threats’ and file an FIR against her in New Delhi.
The BJP reacted to Banerjee’s comments and called them a ‘threat’ to the Election Commission and Gyanesh Kumar. Party leader Sukanta Majumdar asked Kumar to file a complaint against Banerjee. He said that if anything goes wrong with the CEC then the TMC leader should be held responsible.
