Local residents were stunned to see the recently unveiled Gandhi statue in Kerala’s Guruvayur Municipality. There was no resemblance to Mahatma Gandhi in this statue unveiled in the Bio Park of the Municipality. In this statue of Gandhi, there is no similarity in his distinctive spectacles, walking stick or face.
For the last several days, the work of installing Gandhiji’s statue was going on in the Bio Park of Guruvayur Municipality. When the Gandhi statue was unveiled on Monday (October 27, 2025), the local people and those present at the ceremony were stunned to see it. Obviously no one would have seen such a statue of Mahatma Gandhi before. Thrissur BJP’s North District Committee member Sumesh Kumar and local people said that one does not become Gandhi just by adding glasses and a stick.

Locals have expressed concern that the statue bears little resemblance to Mahatma Gandhi, one of the most iconic figures of India’s freedom struggle. Many people are debating whether this statue actually represents the Father of the Nation.
What did the municipality say in its clarification?
Despite the controversy regarding this statue of Mahatma Gandhi, Guruvayur Municipality President and IAS officer Divya S. Iyer jointly unveiled the statue. Opposition parties have accused the municipality of insulting Mahatma Gandhi. There was an uproar on social media regarding this statue of Gandhi. Local people are expressing their displeasure against the municipality.
According to the municipality’s explanation, when the sculptor was asked about the strange appearance of the statue, he reportedly said that he had created the statue based on Gandhi’s ideology. At the same time, the Municipal President has denied these allegations that this is an attempt to insult Gandhi.
