Transfer of more than 200 officers before the announcement of SIR in Bengal, BJP complains to the Election Commission

The Election Commission has announced to conduct Special Intensive Review (SIR) of voters in 12 states and union territories of the country. Just hours before the Election Commission’s announcement, Mamata government transferred more than 200 officers including DM, SDM of many districts in West Bengal. War of words has started between BJP and TMC regarding this. BJP has even complained about this to the Election Commission.

On Monday (October 27, 2025), 235 officers have been transferred by the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms of the Government of West Bengal, which includes 17 District Magistrates, 22 Additional District Magistrates, 45 Subdivision Officers and 151 BDOs. This is one of the biggest transfers in one go in recent times.

BJP complained to the Election Commission

Bharatiya Janata Party has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission on these transfers made by Mamata government. Bengal BJP said that these ‘irregular transfers’ made without the approval of the Election Commission should be canceled immediately.

Let us inform that the Managing Director (MD) of Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO), Municipal Commissioner of Kolkata Municipal Corporation and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Haldia Development Authority are also included in the list of transfers. The list of transferred district magistrates includes North and South 24 Parganas, Cooch Behar, Murshidabad, Purulia, Darjeeling, Malda, Birbhum, Jhargram and East Medinipur districts.

BJP accused TMC government

An official said that these personnel were expected to play a nodal role in the upcoming SIR exercise and it would have been impossible for the state government to make further changes after the schedule was announced by the Election Commission. The opposition party in the state, BJP, alleged that this move is an attempt by the Mamata Banerjee administration to sabotage the upcoming SIR process. At the same time, the ruling Trinamool Congress has described the notifications as routine.

BJP leader Sajal Ghosh alleged, ‘Mamata Banerjee feels that after the successful completion of this process and removal of a large number of names of fake voters from the voter list, problems may arise for her party. Therefore, she is making every effort to disrupt this process by making such a large number of changes at the last minute.

TMC’s reaction on BJP’s allegations

Rejecting this allegation, Trinamool Congress IT cell chief Debangshu Bhattacharya said that the BJP is using tactics to make baseless allegations. He said, ‘Such transfers happen regularly throughout the year in the administration. There is no reason to draw any connection between this and the SIR announcement. This is just protest for the sake of protest.
