The politics of West Bengal is going to heat up once again. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced to launch a new public relations campaign in the entire state regarding the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). According to the party, this is not just a political program but a citizenship rights campaign for those refugees who have been waiting for recognition for years.
State BJP President Sameek Bhattacharya said that the organization has started preparations to organize more than one thousand citizenship application camps. These camps will be organized especially in the districts bordering Bangladesh, North 24 Parganas, Nadia, Cooch Behar and North Dinajpur. A large number of Matua and Hindu refugee communities live in these areas, whom the party wants to help in applying under CAA. According to Bhattacharya, “CAA is the soul of BJP’s promises. There was a delay due to the pandemic, but now we are going among the public with full preparation.”
Workers are being given training on citizenship process
National Organization General Secretary of the party in Kolkata, B.L. Recently, a special workshop was organized in the presence of Santosh, where the citizenship application process was explained to the district and divisional level leaders. Trained workers will now go from village to village to help people fill forms, prepare documents and apply online.
Focus on Matua community
BJP’s strategy in the state seems to revolve around Matua and other Hindu refugee groups. The Matua community, which had migrated from Bangladesh, has been demanding citizenship for a long time. Party’s refugee cell convenor Asim Sarkar said that we will encourage all Hindu refugees who came between 2000 and December 31, 2024 to apply. The Chief Minister has misled them, while the CAA ensures their constitutional rights.
