After Bihar, now the process of SIR has started in five major states of the country, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala and West Bengal. For this, the Election Commission and State Election Commissioners have started extensive preparations. The Commission discussed all the nuances of SIR and its requirements in detail in the two-day national meeting of CEOs and DEOs held in New Delhi. This review meeting was chaired by Election Commission Chairman Gyanesh Kumar and detailed reports were sought from the Chief Electoral Officers of all the states and the election officers of the respective states.
SIR will be held in election states
In this meeting, the Central Election Commissioners held separate talks with the officials of these five states where assembly elections are to be held in the months of April and May next year. Actually, the main objective of this meeting was to prepare a transparent, inclusive and error-free voter list, so that the electoral process can be conducted in a fair and effective manner.
It was instructed in the meeting that all the officers should ensure the name of every eligible citizen while correcting the voter list in their respective areas. Besides, proper formation and training of organizational units like BLO, ERO, DEO, AERO was also a major point of concern.
Focus on use of digital mediums
The Election Commission also gave instructions to give maximum priority to maximum use of digital mediums, voter awareness and quick resolution of grievance redressal. What was also important in this meeting was that after separately reviewing the preparations of the officials of these election states, preparing voter lists in the states within the time limit and ensuring a fair democratic process was the top priority of the Commission.
During the meeting, it was also emphasized that constitutional and legal provisions will be fully followed during the entire process of SIR, so that the rights of any voter are not violated.
