Durgapur gang rape: CM Mamata Banerjee said – ‘Why was the victim outside at 12:30?’, the family said – ‘The incident happened at 8 o’clock in the night’


A comment by State Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding the gang rape case of MBBS student in Durgapur, West Bengal has created a political uproar. CM Mamata Banerjee said that how the victim of the Durgapur Medical College gang rape case was outside at 12:30 in the night, regarding which the opposition parties claim that the CM is blaming the victim.

Many leaders expressed displeasure over this controversial comment of CM Mamata Banerjee. Describing it as insensitive, he said that this claim of CM Banerjee does not match with the police complaint of the victim and the statement given by her friends and family, which shows that the incident took place much before midnight. Five people have been arrested so far in the case.

CM Mamata Banerjee’s claim regarding the incident

In fact, on Friday, the victim complained to the police and said that some people raped her outside the premises of the institute located in Durgapur. According to the police, this incident happened when the second year student had gone out for dinner with one of her friends.

Mamta Banerjee, while talking to the media on Sunday (October 12, 2025), said, ‘The victim was studying in a private medical college. Whose responsibility are all the private medical colleges? How did she come out at 12:30 in the night? As far as I know, this incident happened in a forest area, the investigation of which is going on.

The victim’s family told the time of the incident

The CM further said that although he is shocked by the incident, private medical colleges should take care of their students, especially girls, and they should not be allowed to go out at night. Besides, the girl students will also have to protect themselves.

Mamata Banerjee’s statement indicates that the gang rape incident took place at midnight, while the victim’s parents said that their friends told them about the incident around 9-9:30 pm on Friday night. According to NDTV report, in the complaint lodged by the father, it was said that the incident of sexual harassment took place at 8 pm, when the student had gone out with a friend from her college.

Father received a call from friends at this time

According to the report of HT, the father said in the statement, ‘We received a call from the daughter’s classmates at around 9.30 pm. Her classmates told us that she had been raped and that we should come to Durgapur immediately. We reached the campus on Saturday morning. His condition is not good and he is admitted in the hospital. The miscreants asked for money to return his mobile.

Regarding the incident, the woman’s mother alleged that the daughter had gone to eat outside the premises on the advice of her friend and three people started chasing them, after which her friend left her and ran away.

Statement of the victim’s mother regarding the incident

In the statement, the victim’s mother said, ‘My daughter also started running, but could not locate her friend. When the three accused found my daughter alone, they took her to the nearby forest. Two more people came with him. One of them committed a crime and snatched his mobile. He was threatened that if he dared to shout, he would be killed.
