A 65-year-old woman has been arrested from Sabroom, a border town in South Tripura district, who is suspected to be a Pakistani national who broke out of a jail in Nepal and escaped. The woman is also suspected of being involved in drug smuggling.
Sabroom police officer Nityanand Sarkar said that the woman, who told her name as Louise Nighat Akhtar Bano. He was detained by GRP from Sabroom railway station and later handed over to the local police station for questioning.
‘The woman had come with the intention of crossing the border and going to Bangladesh’
Nityananda Sarkar said, “It is suspected that the woman had come with the intention of crossing the border to Bangladesh. Police and other security agencies are interrogating her to gather more information about her activities and intentions.” Inquiries revealed that the woman had escaped from a jail in Nepal and may have Pakistani links, although her nationality is yet to be confirmed. Further investigation is underway regarding his identity and background.
Came to Nepal 12 years ago on Pakistani passport
Bano is reportedly the wife of a person named Mohammad Golaf Faraz, resident of Sheikhupura, Pakistan. She came to Nepal 12 years ago on a Pakistani passport and got involved in drug smuggling. In 2014, he was arrested by Nepal Police for carrying one kilo of brown sugar and was later sentenced to 15 years in jail.
Lewis Nighat Akhtar Bano was serving her sentence in a Kathmandu jail until last month, when she reportedly escaped amid widespread unrest in Nepal. In September 2025, a mass prison escape occurred across Nepal amid violent anti-government protests, resulting in more than 13,000 prisoners escaping across the country. However, many of them were later arrested while trying to flee to India.
