The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) hit out at the Congress over former Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram’s remarks about ‘Operation Blue Star’, saying that the truth should be recorded in history that the operation was carried out not because of the need of the nation, but because of the ‘political audacity’ of Indira Gandhi. BJP asked whether Congress will now take action against Chidambaram for speaking the truth and exposing the false narrative?
In fact, Chidambaram had said in a literary program in Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh that ‘Operation Blue Star’, launched in June 1984 to catch the terrorists hiding in the Golden Temple, was not the right method and the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had to pay the price for it with her life.
‘Operation Blue Star’ is the wrong way to catch terrorists
He said, ‘There could have been some other way to catch all the terrorists, but ‘Operation Blue Star’ was the wrong way and I agree that Mrs. Gandhi paid the price for this mistake with her life. This was a joint decision of the army, intelligence, police and civil defense agencies and you cannot hold Mrs Gandhi entirely responsible.
‘Operation Blue Star’ was a military operation conducted to expel Damdami Taksal leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and terrorists from the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Later on October 31, 1984, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated.
Kiren Rijiju responded
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, reacting to the former Home Minister’s comment, said in a post on ‘X’, ‘Chidambaram ji has accepted the mistakes of Congress very late. Earlier Chidambaram had revealed that due to heavy pressure from America and foreign powers, India could not respond to Pakistani terrorist attacks in Mumbai, now he is admitting that ‘Operation Blue Star’ in the Golden Temple was also a mistake.
Reacting to Chidambaram’s remarks, BJP national spokesperson R P Singh criticized the Congress and said, ‘This truth should be recorded in history.’ He said that ‘Operation Blue Star’ was not a national necessity, but it was a ‘political audacity’. Being a nationalist, I firmly believe that ‘Operation Blue Star’ could have been completely avoided, as former Home Minister P Chidambaram has rightly said.
