The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has achieved major success in Interpol’s Operation HAECHI-VI. The purpose of this international operation was to stop the increasing cases of online fraud and cyber fraud. In this operation, CBI arrested 8 big criminals and identified 45 suspects, who were connected to the cyber crime network spread in many countries.
CBI said that 66,340 US dollars i.e. about Rs 55 lakh in cash has been recovered from these criminals. Also, 30 bank accounts have been blocked, which were being used for fraud.
CBI took action in collaboration with American agencies
CBI’s International Operations Division worked closely with the American FBI, US Department of Justice and German agencies during this entire operation. Based on information received from America, CBI caught two criminals who were trapping American minor girls through social media. They used to threaten them and force them to send obscene pictures and videos.
During this operation, on inputs received from FBI, two fake call centers running in Delhi and Amritsar were caught. These call centers were cheating American citizens online in the name of providing tech support.
Call center cheating German citizens busted in Siliguri
At the same time, on information received from German agencies, another fake call center was busted in Siliguri (Darjeeling) of West Bengal, which was involved in cheating German citizens. These cyber thugs used to contact foreign citizens through phone calls, emails and social media. By pretending to be bank officers or tech support agents, they used to scare or deceive people and by obtaining their bank accounts or personal details, they used to cheat lakhs of rupees. In some cases, this gang was also involved in activities like romance scams and online sextortion.
CBI gave information regarding Interpol operation
CBI said that this operation of Interpol has dealt a big blow to the network of cyber criminals at the international level. The agency said that large-scale action was taken in coordination between India and many other countries, due to which many supply chains of these gangs were broken.
CBI officials say that such cyber networks are a big threat to the online security and personal information of common people. Due to this operation, not only many fake call centers were closed, but many new patterns of cyber fraud have also come to light, which will now be continuously monitored.
