The Congress and some other opposition parties condemned the incident of India’s Chief Justice (CJI) Justice BR Gawai allegedly tried to throw the shoe. Opposition parties said on Monday (October 6, 2025) that this is an attack on the dignity and constitution of the judiciary.
During the proceedings on Monday (October 6, 2025) in the Supreme Court, a 71 -year -old lawyer allegedly tried to throw the shoe towards Justice Gawai. After the incident, the CGI maintained its restraint and urged the lawyers present in the court room to continue their arguments.
The accused lawyer was later identified as Rakesh Kishore (71), a resident of Mayur Vihar. He reached the stage, took out his shoe and tried to bounce her towards judges.
CJI No word enough to condemn the attempt to attack- Sonia Gandhi
Congress Parliamentary Party chief Sonia Gandhi said, ‘No words are sufficient to condemn the attack on the Honorable Chief Justice of India in the Supreme Court. This is an attack not only on them (on CJI), but also our Constitution. He said, ‘Chief Justice Gavai is very gentle, but the nation should stand up with them with deep pain and resentment.’
Attack on the dignity of the judiciary- Mallikarjun Kharge
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge posted on the social media platform X and wrote, ‘Today the attempt to attack the Honorable Chief Justice of India in the Supreme Court is shameful and disgusting. This is an attack on the dignity of our judiciary and the rule of law. He said, ‘When a person who reached the highest judicial post of the country through merit, honesty and strong power is targeted in this way, it is a very disturbing thing. This reflects an attempt to intimidate and humiliate the person who has broken social obstacles to maintain the constitution.
Kharge said, ‘This kind of act shows how hatred and bigotry has engulfed our society in the last decade. From the Congress, I condemn this attack in strong words. The security and safety of our judiciary is paramount. Let justice and logic be strong, not fear.
Rahul Gandhi condemned attempting to attack CJI
Former Congress president and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, said in a post on the social media platform X, ‘The attack on the Chief Justice is an attack on the dignity of our judiciary and the spirit of the constitution. There is no place for such hatred in our country and such acts should be condemned.
This effort is threatened by our judiciary and democracy- Priyanka Gandhi Vadra
Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra termed the attempt to attack the CJI extremely embarrassing, unfortunate and worrying. He wrote in the post on X, ‘This is not just on the Chief Justice of the country, but is an attack on our Constitution, the entire judicial system and the rule of law. The Chief Justice has achieved the highest judicial post by breaking all the bonds of the society on the strength of his hard work, dedication and merit. Such an attack on him is fatal for both judiciary and democracy. It is less condemnable as it is.
Kapil Sibal targeted PM Modi, Amit Shah and Law Minister
Rajya Sabha member and senior advocate Kapil Sibal said that the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Law Minister Arjunram Meghwal on this incident is amazing. He posted on X, ‘Everyone should publicly condemn the rude behavior of a member of the Supreme Court bar, as it is an insult to the dignity of the court. The silence of the Prime Minister, Home Minister and Law Minister is amazing.
The incident cannot be taken lightly- CM Stalin
DMK leader and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said, ‘There has been a shameful act against Honorable CJI. The attack on Gawai is an attack on the highest judicial office of our democracy and should be strongly condemned. He said that the way the Chief Justice responded with decency, peace and generosity, it reflects the strength of the institution, but this incident cannot be taken lightly.
Stalin said, ‘The reason for his act that the attacker explained, shows how deep the oppressive and varna system is still prevalent in our society. We should nurture a culture that respects and protects our institutions and display maturity in our conduct.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh said, ‘People of haaf and narrow mindset are not able to tolerate a person of a Dalit society on the post of Chief Justice. In Modi Raj, see the audacity of hatred that an attempt was made to throw a shoe at the Chief Justice of the country. This is the culmination of hatred.
This extremely condemnable event- Mamta Banerjee
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, ‘I strongly condemn the attempt to attack India Chief Justice BR Gawai in the Supreme Court premises today. This is a very condemnable event and is clearly an attack on the Constitution of India. He said, ‘I personally respect Justice Gawai and send her best wishes to the currently flooded North Bengal, where I am visiting.’
