Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana, was hit by torrential rains on Sunday (14 September 2025). Because of this the whole city was submerged. The roads of the city became ponds and there was a boom in the drains. This natural disaster took away the lives of three youths. Two youths in Asif Nagar’s Afzal Sagar Mangru Basti and a young man in Vinod Nagar in Mushirabad got swept away.
The rain started from morning was not taking the name of staying till noon. In Asif Nagar, the maternal uncle pair, whose names have not yet been revealed. They left the house amidst the rain. According to eyewitnesses, suddenly the water level of the drain increased and both took away both. On the other hand, in Vinod Nagar, Mushirabad, a young man named Sunny slipped on the banks of the drain and disappeared in the sharp stream.
Rescue team started rescue operation
As soon as the news of the incident spread, police, Disaster Response Force (DRF) and Hyderabad Disaster Response Agency (HYDR) teams came into action. Rescue operations with drones, ropes and pumps began, but strong current made relief tasks difficult. Local residents stood on the streets overnight and started searching for their loved ones. A resident weeping said, “We had demanded cleaning of drains earlier, but no one listens.”
Old problem of Hyderabad city
The tragedy caused by the rain exposes the old problems of the city of Hyderabad, illegal construction, filled drainage and weak drainage system. In areas like Habib Nagar, Asif Nagar and Mushirabad, waterlogging becomes fatal in every rain. Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has issued an alert and appealed to people to stay in homes. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has ordered the victim families to give immediate relief and speed up rescue operations. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has also warned of heavy rain on Monday (15 September 2025).
