Karnataka Labor Ministry called TCS for talks in the case of retrenchment

Karnataka Labor Minister Santosh Lad on Thursday (31 July 2025) has asked the country’s largest IT company TCS to give the reason behind the large -scale trimming. He said, “Yesterday we came to know that TCS is going to lay off 12,000 employees. Our department has called TCS officers to find out the reason.” He said that Sunrise Industries has been exempted from labor laws, but some conditions are also attached.

‘Large -scale job cuts are dangerous’

The Karnataka government minister said, “We have kept Sunrise Industries out of the purview of labor laws and for the last five years we have been giving them a rebate from year to year, yet some conditions are attached.” Sunrise sector means a new or relatively new industry that is growing fast and is expected to become an important driver of the economy in future. TCS has described large -scale job cuts as dangerous

He said, “If they want to remove someone from the job, then they have to give us information. We are talking to them on this basis.” The TCS had indicated that it is about two per cent or 12,261 employees of its global workforce this year, most of which will be of middle and senior classes.

By the end of June 2025, the number of TCS employees was 6,13,069. It increased its number of employees by 5,000 in the recently ended April-June quarter. The TCS said in a statement that the step is part of the company’s comprehensive strategy to become an organization ready for future, which focuses on investing in technology, AI sin, market expansion and workforce reorganization.

Karnataka State IT Employees Union protested

The Karnataka State IT/ITES Employees Union (KITU) had strongly objected to a large -scale layoffs and filed a complaint against TCS against Additional Labor Commissioner G Manjunath.

In a statement, the Sangh said that it has demanded legal action against the management for violation of the provisions of the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947. Also, in relation to reporting of service details, action has also been demanded against the conditions imposed by the Government of Karnataka.
