10 year old diesel vehicles were not banned … Delhi government knocked on the door of Supreme Court

The Delhi government has demanded a review of the ban on diesel vehicles more than 10 years old in Delhi-NCR and more than 15 years old petrol vehicles on Saturday (July 26, 2025). The government argues that the existing policy is facing unfair pressure on the middle class. Rekha Gupta government has demanded to reconsider the 2018 rule in which old trains are banned.

The Supreme Court has been requested to instruct the Central Government or Air Quality Management Commission (CAQM) to conduct a comprehensive scientific study. This study will assess the real environmental impact of the ban imposed based on the age of vehicles and evaluate whether the step contributes significantly to air quality improvement in the National Capital Region (NCR).

What was said in the petition?

It has been emphasized in the petition that the impact and fairness on the complete ban on all vehicles should be re -examined. The government advocates a more accurate, emission-based regulatory structure, which takes into account air pollution and fitness of the vehicle instead of the age of the vehicle.

The current rule demands uniform compliance for all vehicles, whether they are very polluting or well -maintained, low -use vehicles. It does not coincide with a broader goal of effectively reducing pollution levels in the region.

Delhi government’s appeal

The Delhi government said that BS-6 vehicles, which have been brought under the clean emission standard, cause much less pollution than BS-4 vehicles. The government argued that many vehicles currently affected by the restrictions are well maintained and follow the necessary criteria.

Citing various studies, the government has said that pollution is very low from older trains. This ban is putting unnecessary burden on middle class people, which use these trains as limited but according to the need. The government wants more scientific and fair measures to be taken for pollution control.
