There was a huge uproar outside the Odisha Assembly on Wednesday (July 16, 2025), when many people gathered to protest after the death of a self -immolation. Angry protesters tried to break the police barricading, in response to which the state police fired tear gas shells and fired the crowd by running water canon (water showers). The demonstration was about the death of a 22 -year -old student who recently set himself on fire after allegations of sexual exploitation at Balasore’s Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College.
The protesting people included a large number of student organizations, social workers and common citizens. The protesters demanded that the professor accused of sexual exploitation should be strict punishment and the role of the college administration should also be investigated. The student died in AIIMS Bhubaneswar late on Monday night. He had made serious allegations against a senior professor of his college. The protesters accused the government of delay in justice and ignoring the victim. He demanded immediate and strict action against the culprits. A large number of police forces were deployed on the spot and security has been tightened.

In the video revealed from the protest site, it can be seen that the protesters are trying to move forward by pushing barricading, while the police are seen using water canon to stop them. After this, the police also released tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.
What is the demand of protesters?
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Manjhi has already announced a high -level inquiry into the matter and financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh to the victim’s family, but the protesters say that justice will not be given justice. They are demanding action on the college administration along with the arrest of the accused.
